◆ Adriaan Valckenier was born in Amsterdam 6th June 1695 and died in Batavia 20 June 1751. He left Amsterdam in 1714 for Batavia where he started his working life as a junior merchant, progressing to senior merchant, alderman of the city (1726-7), accountant-general (1627), councillor extraordinary (1730), councillor ordinary (1733) and on the 20th August 1736 appointed first councillor and director-general of the Dutch East Indies (VOC). He resigned in 1741 due to his role in the riots of 1740 where many innocent Chinese were killed.
When the East Indiaman “Amsterdam” sank in 1741 near the Shetland Islands nearly 2400 pieces of porcelain with his arms were lost. Today few survive.
He is known to have ordered 7 dinner services with a total of 15 varieties of border pattern.
The family have borne these arms since 1630.
